Per the publisher, the Encyclopedia of Space and Astronomy focuses mainly on modern astronomy and space achievements but also includes the most important accomplishments of classical astronomy. The impact of astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology is presented in terms of the development of the scientific method and also with respect to philosophy. History-related entries trace the evolution of astronomy and space technology from ancient times, and selected entries discuss important observatories and organizations such as NASA, as well as contemporary events.

Encyclopedia of Space Exploration

Angelo, J. A. (2000). Encyclopedia of space exploration. New York, NY: Facts on File.

Encyclopedia of Space Science and Technology

Encyclopedia of space science & technology (2003). In Mark H. (Ed.), New York: Wiley.

The encyclopedia is written at a high technical level, by experts in the space science disciplines for an audience of technically literate people who are not experts in space science or technology.  It contains articles that describe the technology of space exploration as well as the scientific results and their applications.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Universe

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Universe.  (2001). New York:  Watson-Guptill Publications.

The encyclopedia provides broad coverage of the history from the theories of the Ancient Greeks and findings of Copernicus and Galileo to today’s current astronomical research and the space program.  The encyclopedia is geared more toward undergraduates, and includes a glossary, bibliography, web sites, and listings of spacecraft missions, mathematical concepts, and celestial data.  (Reviewed in Library Journal)

Handbooks

Handbook of Space Astronomy and Astrophysics

Zombeck, M. V. (2007). Handbook of space astronomy and astrophysics (3rd ed. ed.). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

The Third Edition is a comprehensive compilation of the facts and figures relevant to astronomy and astrophysics, including data from space-based observations. The handbook includes tables, graphs, diagrams and formulae as well as a comprehensive index and bibliography.

Metallic Materials and Elements for Aerospace Vehicle Structures

United States. Dept. of Defense. (2003). Metallic materials and elements for aerospace vehicle structures [electronic resource] (Knovel interactive ed. ed.). Norwich, N.Y.: Knovel. http://www.knovel.com/web/portal/basic_search/display?_EXT_KNOVEL_DISPLAY_bookid=754

This handbook contains standardized design values and related design information for metallic materials and structural elements used in aerospace vehicle structures.  This is an electronic resource available thru Knovel.

The Standard Handbook for Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineers

The standard handbook for aeronautical and astronautical engineers (2003). In Davies M. (Ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill.

The Standard Handbook for Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineers represents efforts to amalgamate aeronautical and astronautical engineering into a single handbook. There are five sections on basic engineering science and mathematics that are the foundation of aerospace operations and design.  The handbook is written for both students of these engineering disciplines and engineering professionals.
