The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) established the NASA Astrobiology Institute in 1998 as an innovative way to develop the field of astrobiology and provide a scientific framework for flight missions. NAI is a virtual, distributed organization of competitively-selected teams that integrate astrobiology research and training programs in concert with the national and international science communities.? Available from the site is information on the latest research efforts, funding information, news and NAI publications, including reports, a newsletter and an Ask a Astrobiologist feature.

The website was created as a knowledge network to promote learning and sharing among NASA’s engineers. This site would be of interest to aerospace engineers primarily or students looking for a timeline of Lessons Learned from NASA projects. NASA’s Office of the Chief Engineer and the NASA Engineering Network gives the public access to search the NASA Lessons Learned database system.
